This seed milk is made from hemp seeds and raw cacao. The hemp seed gives an earthy flavour and the cacao a deep rich chocolate flavour. Suitable for vegan, raw, dairy-free, nut-free, oil free and general healthy diets.
Hemp seeds are one of the highest forms of plant protein with 34 grams of protein per 100g! Use the hulled hemp seeds for this recipe, they are also known by the lovley name of hemp hearts.
As the hemp seeds are hulled this is quick to make with no straining required – the perfect 30-second dairy and nut free chocolate milk. Cacao is classified as a seed and is high in magnesium, calcium, zinc and other essential minerals. If you are looking for a sweet dessert chocolate milk you may need to up the amount of sweetener.

If you use whole hemp seeds then straining is mandatory due to the hard husk. Straining is optional with other seeds like sunflower and pumpkin as they are usually sold dehusked, although straining makes a smoother milk. If you use whole hemp seeds then soak with a pinch of salt overnight and they will start to sprout and be easier to digest. You can use a milk bag made out of nylon, a cheesecloth or muslin to strain.
You can add lecithin if you like to help bind the milk this is available as either sunflower or soya. This helps to thicken it and keep it combined. I generally don’t add any so it can separate in the fridge but a quick stir mixes that up again. This milk makes an amazing chia pudding.
Make chocolate hemp chia pudding stir in 1/4 the volume of milk in chia seeds and leave to soak for at least 15 mins, overnight is best. Then top with some fruit or stir in some more sweetener if desired.
To make a hemp chocolate banana milkshake just adjust this recipe to add some banana and extra sweetener. If you are avoiding caffeine then replace the cacao with carob powder. This will give it a similar taste to chocolate but will be caffeine free. I try to avoid caffeine after the afternoon as it can interrupt sleep.

Can you use cacao nibs?
Yes, although you will want to blend for longer and have a powerful blender to make sure they are broken up 🙂
Should I use a nut milk bag for this recipe?
Thanks!
Not for this one as the hemp is hulled so no straining required, it’s more like a milkshake actually 🙂
